5 Things To Keep In Mind When Building Your Dream Home

Picture this: You’re soaking in a clawfoot tub, wine glass in hand and beach view out your window, while your spouse finishes up dinner in your luxurious state-of-the-art kitchen downstairs. THIS is your life in a dream home.

Building your dream home is an investment that you’ll want to last a lifetime. Therefore, your home needs to be built with future needs in mind.

Whether you’re in the beginning stages of planning, designing your layout, or just dreaming of your forever home… Here are 5 Tips On Building Your Dream Home From Our Client, Waterstone.

1. Budget Wisely

While it’s easy to get wrapped up in the new home excitement, it can also become overwhelming when there is not a clear understanding of all construction costs to come. By knowing site costs, allowances, government fees, and other add-ons prior to breaking ground, you will be able to plan accordingly & stay within your budget andyour timeline.

2. Choose The Right Floor Plan

When you’re creating your custom floor plan, imagine yourself walking through the home. Does the flow of the kitchen to the dining area feel right? How far are the bedrooms from your laundry space?

Many floor plans feature an open concept. It’s a popular layout because the lack of walls between the kitchen, living room, and dining area allow for more socializing. As you look at the open floor plan in your home design, think about how the rooms connect. Do you prefer one big space— square, or rectangular—or maybe you’d rather have an L-shape where the kitchen is the pivotal point.

3. Do Your Research

When it comes to the location of your forever home, there’s no such thing as too much research. What would your daily commute to work be like? If you plan on growing your family, is there access to good schools and parks? What about access to shops, restaurants, and other amenities? How is the crime rate? Are there any future building proposals or developments in the works?

Though it may seem overwhelming, planning ahead for your dream home will save you stress long term. For instance, you wouldn’t want to build your dream home on a lake, if you’re more of a beach kind of person.

4. Think Safety

You want to feel safe and secure in your fabulous new home. For this reason, be sure to consider things like exterior lighting, a security system, and even fire exits when planning your build. These simple features will give you peace of mind  as you cozy up in your dream home.

5. Have A Pre Building Plan

It’s easy to know how many bedrooms you want or how spacious you want the living room, kitchen, or master bathroom to be. However, so many other important details tend to get overlooked.

Don’t forget about the extra storage. So many people build what they think is their dream home, only to realize once they’ve moved in that they never factored storage space into their plans.

To help with budgeting, make a list of everything included in construction costs so far. Then decide on add-ons, upgrades, and more storage space. If you try to change anything during construction, you’re going to throw off both your budget and timeline for completion.
